This weekend with Joan Hyman, we will explore the anatomical and the subtler energetic pathways that connect us to our most central support: our spine. In yoga, The Sushumna Nadi is known as our central channel that runs along the spine and is considered the energetic highway of awakening.  Through asana, pranayama, and meditation, we will cultivate balance between effort and ease so that prana, our life force, can rise through our body cultivating clarity and steadiness.

1: Standing Strong
Supporting the spine from the ground up
Friday, March 12 2027 • 5:30 Pm – 8 pm
Rare Bondi Beach

Our spine is supported by our feet, legs and the intelligence of how our bones are stacked.

In this foundational workshop, we will explore how standing postures build structural integrity for the spine through alignment, muscular engagement, and we will learn how to create support from the ground up so the spine can feel both stable and spacious.

We will examine:

  • How the feet influence the pelvis and low back
  • Work poses that strengthen the hips to support out lower back.
  • Work with the wall to strengthen our bones and create a sense of rooting and rebounding in our joints.

Expect steady and thoughtful strength work and gain a deeper understanding of why these upright postures are the keystone for yoga practice.

2: Moving Through Resistance
Inversions and spinal intelligence
Saturday, March 13, 2027 • 11 AM – 1:30 PM
Rare Bondi Beach

Inversions reveal were we are out of balance, they can bring up fear, and show us where we resist.

This workshop will explore how the spine responds when upside down and our orientation shifts. We will focus on how to move through resistance, physically and mentally, while maintaining integrity.

We will explore:

  • Shoulder stability and understand how to balance our spinal curves when inverted.
  • How to get up and stay up.
  • Nervous system response when upside down.
  • Learn prep poses and how to build strength and confidence to practice inversions and stay up!

Inversions can become a laboratory for awareness and eventually they can shift us towards a meditative state. This workshop is suitable for students who are interested in learning more about these challenging and fun poses.

3: Twist & Soak
Rotation. Release. Reset.
Saturday, March 7th 2026 • 2:30 PM - 5 PM
Rare Bondi Beach

Twists are about intelligent rotation and understanding how to stacy each part of your spine. They create a squeeze and soak sensation in the intervertable discs, helping our system to feel transformed and alive! We will explore where rotation truly begins in the spine and will build heat through standing twists before transitioning into longer holds in seated twists to calm the nervous system and “wring” our tissues out.

You will explore:

  • Thoracic mobility - where the twisting originates from.
  • Breath support through lengthen our spine.
  • The relationship between rotation and stability
  • We will end with a light pranayama practice

Expect both activation and release. All levels welcome!

Backbending is often misunderstood as flexibility, and in truth, it requires, intelligent, strength, and balanced in our spine.

Backbends when practiced slowly and with awareness can strengthen our posterior chain, mobilize the thoracic spine, and lengthen the whole front body leaving us open and energized!

We will explore:

  • How to gain support from our pelvis and legs
  • How to mobilize our thoracic spine
  • Progression in backbends

The intention in this workshop is how to practice backbends for longevity and sustainablity. Students should be comfortable in foundational poses before joining this workshop.

5: Prana & Subhuman
Awakening our central channel
Sunday, March 14 2027 • 3 PM - 5 PM
Rare Surry Hills

Beyond anatomy lies our subtle body. In this final workshop, we shift our focus from the structure of the spine to the energetics that flow through our sushumna nadi, the central channel through which prana is said to flow.

This practice will include:

  • Supported postures to stimulate awareness in this area of our body.
  • Pranayama practices to balance the ida and pingala and awaken our bandhas.
  • Meditation on our central axis.

This is a quieter, more internal practice designed to integrate the physical body and create a felt sense of centeredness.

All levels welcome.
